Ask Emma | Vol. 1
In this issue: Moving in together, wedding anxiety, how to refresh yourself without going on vacation + more
We’re all familiar with the AMA prompts on social media, but because I’m trying to not be as online with Instagram, I decided to open an AMA chat for paying subscribers on Substack and see what it got me. The verdict: 8 pretty solid questions that I, of course, am more than happy to answer with too many words.
Enjoy volume one of Ask Emma and, if you’re a paying subscriber, keep an eye out for the next opportunity to ask me anything.
Question: I’m moving in with the bf (well, into a new house together) and need all the “moving in together” advice-what would you tell scared Emma about moving in together?
I would tell her to re-read this article she wrote about exactly this back in 2021! But if you’re on the TLDR train, allow me to sum it up quickly: It takes time to blend your styles together, so be patient. I’ve been living with Zac for three years this spring and we just got to a place decor-wise that feels exactly right. Also, remember that just because you live under one roof doesn’t mean you have to be together every second. This was a hard-won lesson for me, but I finally realized that you can exist together, separately. Bottom line, though, communicate and ensure everyone is pulling their weight so no resentment builds. It will be an adjustment, but it will come together eventually!
Question: Did I miss a hair update? You loved your cut and now you don’t? Help. Also, what did your mom do with your curls when you were little? Clueless straight-haired mom of a very curly-haired toddler.
This made me LOL. No, you didn’t miss a hair update — I’m just an unstable, fickle bitch who loves her short hair one day and despises it the very next. Here’s what I’ve realized about short hair: It’s actually way more high maintenance than longer hair because you can’t just wash it, dry it and go. Short hair has to have a style, a vibe. And that style has to be just so always. It’s a lot of work, IMO. Therefore, I’m over it. I don’t have the personality to deal with my short hair every single day — I need to be able to pull my hair off my face and into a bun to function properly, so I’m growing it out and I will (probably) never chop it this short again.
