Will she ever return to IG? Jury's out.

“It’s so weird because I usually know exactly what’s going on in your life, but now I have no idea what you’re doing” is a phrase I heard a handful of times this past week from different friends re: my IG hiatus. My response?

“I know. It’s amazing.”

Not that I’m hiding anything — I’m definitely not — but this social media break has been something I knew I needed but maybe not as direly as this. Living my day to day life without reporting every little thing I’m doing or thinking has been beyond freeing. Are my best friends getting the brunt of those minute-by-minute updates via group texts? Absolutely. But they don’t seem to mind. And isn’t that what best friends are for anyway?

Not to mention that being offline in that way is driving my creativity behind this letter. I have so much more to say, so much more to share with you every week now. I’m taking copious notes in my phone so I don’t forget to share the small moments with you that I would normally set and forget via an IG story.

As this point, I’m not sure what the future holds for me and IG, but what I can tell you is that the desire to return to its roots — a platform solely for instantaneous pictures — is strong. To leave the words and writing to my Substack and treat IG as a visual guide with little to no words is something I’m heavily flirting with.

I’ve received a few emails from readers or followers who are respecting my time off IG but finding old-new ways to reach out, and to say it’s made my day any time I get an email would be an understatement. That some of you have taken the time to write me like a true pen pal via the old electronic mail system is pure heaven, and begs me to remind you ALL that my inbox (emma@emmasthing.com) is ALWAYS open!
